Roll-Off Dumpsters and Hurricane Cleanup

We are dealing with the aftermath of Helene and Milton across the Southeast. Devastation has been left from Central Florida to North Carolina and Tennessee. If you are one of those impacted by either storm, here are some tips for roll-off dumpsters and Hurricane Cleanup.

Roll-Off Dumpsters

Choosing the right-sized dumpster is vital in your hurricane cleanup. If you have a larger yard, you will require a larger dumpster to accommodate all the limbs and debris you must clean up. Our roll-off dumpster sizes range from ten to forty yards, the number of cubic yards a dumpster can hold. If you aren’t sure, we would be happy to help you figure out what size roll-off dumpster you need.

Before Hurricane Cleanup

One thing you want to ensure before you dispose of tree limbs, debris, and trash in your roll-off dumpster is to document the hurricane damage to your home and yard for insurance purposes. It’s hard to get insurance companies to pay out on a claim if there isn’t at least photographic evidence of the damage.

Hurricane Cleanup Precautions

Cleaning debris from a hurricane can be dangerous; everything from broken glass to rusty nails could be among the tree limbs and trash. Always wear protective gloves and eyewear when throwing debris and trash into your roll-off dumpster. Why? Things like crushed glass and slivers of metal can cut your hands or, worse, get into your eyes.

Don’t Overdo It

As anyone who has cleaned up after a hurricane knows, it can be a grueling process. Work in shifts if others are assisting you with cleanup. If you are cleaning up your yard alone, take frequent breaks. You can be overwhelmed and exhausted by constant cleanup, and mistakes and injuries are more likely to happen.

Choose the Right Place for Your Roll-Off Dumpster

When ordering your roll-off dumpster, choose a location with no low power lines or limbs. The location should also be easily accessible when disposing of hurricane debris without blocking driveways or causing problems for your neighbors.

Think Efficiency

When placing hurricane debris such as damaged furniture, tree limbs, and trash into your roll-off dumpster, choose the heavier items first to fill the bottom so there is more room for the smaller items. Breaking down furniture or cutting up limbs will give you even more room inside your roll-off dumpster.

Don’t Overload Your Roll-Off Dumpster

Remember that your dumpster can only hold so much before it becomes a hazard for operators and could damage the dumpster transport. Here are the weight limits:

  • 10-yard dumpster: Holds up to 2 tons (4,000 pounds)
  • 15-yard dumpster: Holds 4,000 pounds
  • 20-yard dumpster: Holds 2 to 3 tons (4,000 to 6,000 pounds)
  • 40-yard dumpster: Holds 4 tons, or 8,000 pounds.

Don’t Dispose of Hazardous Materials in Your Roll-Off Dumpster

Not all trash can be disposed of in a roll-off dumpster. Check our list of what can and can’t be thrown in your dumpster here.

Salvage Sentimental Items

Throwing everything out may seem like a good idea, but many of your family photos or heirlooms can be cleaned and salvaged.
